Real or Fake Christmas Tree

This is my dilemma what do I want? We currently have a fake tree that we've had for a couple years that some of the branch's are broke on. The sad thing is the branch's broke the same year we bought the tree. I am tired of having to rig up the branch's so my tree looks decent and don't feel like doing it this year. So I am thinking of getting a real tree this year. I think my boys would love getting to go out and pick our tree instead of just pulling it out of the box. My fears are that having a real tree may affect my asthma or the boys allergies. I am also worried about our cat eating the tree he already tries to eat the fake one.

So I am curious what are your thoughts on this subject?

Real or Fake which would be the best for my family??

  1. We have fake right now. My husband wants to get a real one but I'd be the one taking care of it and I've never handled a real tree. I think when the kids get older we might do a real one though. Noah puts everything in his mouth right now.

  2. Well, I love real trees- the smell, the look! With that said, fake trees are so much easier to deal with. Take them out of the box, pop them up and go. No having to water them, deal with cleaning up the mess real trees make. Plus, many come with the lights already attached. I say go for the fake. It will make life much easier. We got 2 last year after Christmas for half-price.

  3. I'd be nervous about your family's allergies and asthma, but you never know, it might not be an issue! I say get the real tree this year and try it out, but keep your old tree just in case. Maybe set it up and see how it goes, but if it gets to be too much, take it down. You'll never know and you might always wonder if it'll be an option.

If you need to get a new fake tree, I would check out your Goodwill. They had a ton of REALLY nice trees on sale after Christmas, and they might even have trees before from people who decided to get a real tree.

  4. I'm a little biased as my husband works in the tree industry but we always have a real tree as it is his Christmas gift fro the boss. I always love it! Not only does it smell beautiful but it is also unique which I love. Trees can be messy but if you get them from a reliable source they will last you for a month easily without the "needle mess" people always talk about. Watering a tree can be hard but if you trim a low branch off in the back it can make it much easier and no one will notice. Good luck!

  5. We pick real for many reasons. For one... the smell. NOTHING is better than walking into the house and smelling fresh Christmas tree :D MMMM Best! Plus, I feel its more environmentally friendly. Some might say no because they cut the tree down.. Yes BUT they also come from tree farms where more are planted and cut every year :)

  6. I pick the fake ones but I love the real ones. THe real ones smell so good but the "shedding" gets to my husband since he is a neat freak. I hope next year we get a real one!

  7. I would want a real but we have a fake because our cat eats the real trees.

  8. I love going and chopping down a real tree. We make it an experience and it's so much fun. Then there are the ones you can actually plant after Christmas is over so that's cool, too.

  9. Well we have decided we are going with a real tree this year :-) and I guess depending on how it goes it may become a yearly thing...

  10. Growing up it was always a real one but then when I got married we were given a beautiful prelit tree as a gift so now for the past 2 christmas's its been fake.

  11. We love the look/smell/etc. of real but we hate the idea of cutting down a tree and letting it die... Plus it's SO convenient to get the prelit tree from the attic, assemble the 4 pieces (including the stand) and start hanging ornaments. I'd probably have to vote fake!

  12. Such a hard decision isn't it? A real one is more fun and probably will smell more like Christmas, but then a fake one is easier and more economical. But if I had to, I'd vote real.

  13. When we were picking out our tree at Home Depot, we learned about a hypo-allergenic breed of xmas tree called the "Nordman". Perhaps that would be a good option! Best wishes :)

  14. We have a hard time with this too. The main reason we decided on a fake one is because of the way our house is heated. We have old iron radiators that really dry out the air. we found that our real trees no matter how much we watered them would dry out WAY too fast- making it just not worth buying one. Much easier now!

  15. I vote for a real tree! There's just nothing quite like it. It'd be a hard decision though, with asthma to take into account. My cats actually have never tried to climb our trees. They mostly enjoy hiding in the gifts underneath.
