Natural Antibiotics - Guest Post

I get asked a lot about different natural alternatives for more than just cleaning products. Being natural is a way of life, and an evolving one at that! We are always learning so many different things each day; I just make the changes where I can.

One question I have been asked is what I do for an alternative to prescription antibiotics. Well, here's what I do, and I by no means push this on anyone, this is what has worked for my family.

My first choice is to run for the Grapefruit Seed Extract. You can find this in gel or pill form at your local health food store. I usually always pair it up with Oregano oil capsules, since I'm a big believer in layering! I have also used Olive Leaf extract which comes in a capsule form as well.

For the young children who do not take capsules, I use Black Elderberry Syrup (Gaia Brand). It is a natural antibiotic and it is also antiviral as well!

It takes patience, it usually takes an extra 2-3 days, but it has always worked! These natural antibiotics kill all the bad bacteria and not the good! That is so important!

My last experience with prescription antibiotics is what did it for me. I used natural antibiotics, but when my daughter had a double ear infection and was coughing up green mucous, I thought it was better to get rid of it quick. So I reluctantly, filled the prescription and 6 days later I had to give her different antibiotics because the first lost its effect on her! Well, 3 weeks later, she had a double ear infection again! This time they had to give her the strongest stuff and double the dose! Well, a couple months later, she had another double ear infection! In comes the natural antibiotics! She was well within 10 days of using Grapefruit Seed Extract and she hasn't gotten another ear infection since! And that was 14 months ago!

I hope this helpful and gives you more of a choice when you know the doctor is going to suggest antibiotics! There is a natural alternative to almost every part of life!

Thank you

  1. This is good for prevention of illnesses, but it should be pointed out that it's not ALWAYS the best solution for treatment of super painful ear infections. Thanks for the info, though!

  2. Perfect, thanks so much for this post! I knew about the oregano oil but not the grapefruit seed extract. We also take large doses of vitamin D when we get hit with a sickness/virus. By any chance do you have a dosage for those two? I know you can go according to what it says on the back of the bottle, but with some you can take much more than what is listed on the bottle.

Oh and I'd like to add - as for ear infections (and the pain of them) you can use garlic oil. We melt coconut oil and smash garlic cloves and use a dropper to put the oil in the ear. This not only is a natural antibiotic, but also relieves pain. Much better than an antibiotic!!

    Thanks again for the post!

  4. Awesome. We have never had to use antibiotics yet, but I will definitely be trying these first before going to prescriptions!

  5. I'm so glad this could be helpful!
To Anonymous- You are right there is always an exception, this is what has worked for us. I know if there is ever a time we have to take regular antibiotics, they may actually work because we haven't turned to them for every problem.
Danielle- I have heard of the Vitamin D thing, I think I have actually tried it! Vitamin D3, right....what we also do is take double doses of Juice Plus when we get sick! Juice Plus is super concentrated whole food nutrition in a capsule! It's 25 different fruits, berries, vegetables and grains! Please watch the video on this website- www.dreejuiceplus.com
It also keeps us from really ever getting sick and when we do it's half as long and much less severe! Prevention is always the first step, but having a game plan is always smart when something comes up!

  6. Thanks for sharing! My husband is prescribed antibiotics fairly frequently, but they all say to stay out of the sun... he works on a golf course! I will keep these in mind next time :)

  7. Does your website have a contact page? I'm having trouble locating it but, I'd like to send you an e-mail. I've got some suggestions for your blog you might be interested in hearing. Either way, great website and I look forward to seeing it grow over time. helpful hints Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I'd post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Cheers I have figured out some important things through your site post. One other thing I would like to state is that there are lots of games available and which are designed specially for preschool age kids. They include pattern recognition, colors, pets, and styles. These generally focus on familiarization instead of memorization. This helps to keep little kids occupied without sensing like they are learning. Thanks
