In order for the local communities across America to thrive, social workers must stay dedicated to their profession. Although some social workers may feel under-appreciated at times, their contribution to society is certainly not taken for granted. Here are some of the ways that social work makes a difference in the community.

Abuse still remains a major problem in this country. Although anyone can be the victim of abuse, women and children are especially at risk. It is the social worker’s job to make sure that the victims receive all of the help that is available. If a child is being abused by someone, the social worker will be able to help track down the perpetrator. Schools such as Case Western University train social workers to deal with a variety of different situations involving abuse.
Assists the Homeless
Some people tend to overlook the plight of the homeless. Often times, homeless people are viewed in a poor light without consideration for their situation. Sadly, thousands of adults and children are forced to live on the streets. Contrary to popular belief, not all homeless people are suffering from a drug addiction. If called upon, social workers will help these impoverished individuals to get back on their feet. Social workers also help displaced families to find housing.

Drug abuse continues to have a detrimental impact on families. If the drug user does not receive the necessary help, they may never recover from their dangerous lifestyle. Luckily, a social worker can provide the drug addict with all of the necessary resources to receive help. After getting clean, many former drug abusers are able to turn their lives around.
Reach Out to People Facing Job Loss
A sudden loss of employment can wreak havoc on a person’s life. A social worker can definitely help unemployed individuals to find a feasible occupation. If the person lacks the appropriate training or skill set for a particular job, the social worker will be able to point them in the right direction.
Recovery from Natural Disasters
In the event of a devastating natural disaster, many families are left scrambling for answers. Social workers help to ensure that everyone will be able to find a place to stay. As a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, thousands of local residents had to be transported to new locations.
I've thought about becoming a social worker. There are so many cases, and there are never enough workers.

ReplyDeleteFor a while, when I was in college, I considered being a Social Worker. It's a hard job, but very rewarding!
